What is the difference of unconditionally love and conditional love?

skycat asked:

I am sure you hear the term “unconditional” love, but what does it mean? How do we as humans apply 100% love in an unconditional way? How is love not unconditional? What conditions do humans put on love? Is unconditional love a practical teaching?

Would you say hugs and chores are the way to make a child hardworking?

Roberta S asked:

What makes a child and teen hardworking?

Is it unconditional love shown to him/her and also chores and high expectations for good grades and good job on homework?

From my observation of one family, that seems to be key. However, in this family the children scored low on a standardized test that most others in the class did well on, and the high scorers (just about everybody) was published in the paper. The family reacted by having the kids work really hard for a year, and I think it was their love for their parents that made them work hard to achieve all kinds of awards after that. I suspect there is a scar from that experience that has made them never want to fail (or not be awarded) again, and so they have become very high achievers.

Is this desirable? Oh, sure, now you are hardworking, but what happens at age 30? Burnout? Do you ever get over that kind of crushing blow to ego when you score so low & no one else does? And you feel embarrassed for your parents, who you love?
