programming for historical, educational, research, and archival uses.
Every C-SPAN program aired since 1987, now totaling over 160,000

SAGE is the effort to collaboratively build an open source Scalable
Adaptive Graphics Environment (SAGE) to do such exciting data
manipulations as "cyber-mashups and easily juxtapose information on
tiled display walls. SAGE provides a common environment to access,
stream and view data objects on tiled display walls of any size –
whether digital cinema animations, high-resolution images,
high-definition video-teleconferencing, presentation slides,
documents, spreadsheets or laptop screens." They even have a
gallery
showing examples of this type of use in educational and
other environments around the world.

Here are some more snippets describing it in their words.

"SAGE is a graphics streaming architecture for supporting
collaborative scientific visualization environments with potentially
hundreds of megapixels of contiguous display resolution. In
collaborative scientific visualization, it is crucial to share
high-resolution imagery as well as high-definition video among groups
of collaborators at local or remote sites.

The network-centered architecture of SAGE allows collaborators to
simultaneously run various applications (such as 3D rendering, remote
desktop, video streams and 2D maps) on local or remote clusters, and
share them by streaming the pixels of each application over
ultra-high-speed networks to large tiled displays.

SAGE’s streaming architecture is designed so that the output of
arbitrary M by N pixel rendering cluster nodes can be streamed to X by
Y pixel display screens, allowing user-definable layouts on the
display. The dynamic pixel routing capability of SAGE lets users
freely move and resize each application’s imagery over tiled displays
in run-time, tightly synchronizing the multiple visualization streams
to form a single stream."

"Today’s scientists tackle issues of global priority, such as the
environment, geoscience, bioscience, disaster response, and the
physical nature of the universe, to name a few. Scientists need the
ability to view ultra-resolution images and/or create “cyber-mashups,”
or juxtapositions of information – a critical component of data
analysis – in order to gain more holistic views and insight regarding
complex issues, and make more informed observations and discoveries.
For example, geoscientists study aerial and satellite maps (e.g., 365K
x 365K pixels) and neurobiologists study electron microscope images
(e.g., 4K x 4K pixels).

In our vision of the future, as illustrated below, SAGE assumes that
displays will be cheap enough to “wallpaper” entire rooms, and that
the bandwidth needed to drive them will become even cheaper. Future
situation rooms and research laboratories will have walls made of
seamless ultra-high-resolution displays fed by data streamed over
optical networks from distantly located visualization clusters,
storage servers, and high-definition video cameras."

Would you let your children play with a doll toy that gets possessed by demons if it were educational?

Question by Paranormal Kitty: Would you let your children play with a doll toy that gets possessed by demons if it were educational?
I had a brilliant idea come to me for an educational toy that teaches religion and humanities to young children. This would be a doll, actually there would probably be many dolls so we could have both boys and girls and varying skin and hair colors so the kids could get a doll that resembles them. The dolls would have a little compartment inside which would contain a replica of a demon, created from classical paintings that depict demons. You also have to get a priest doll to exorcise the doll’s demon – the doll will have a magnetic/electronic device that is unlocked by putting it near the priest doll but only after you make the priest doll hold up a cross and press a button that makes him speak and exorcism ritual. Once the exorcism happens, the doll’s chest/stomach will pop open and the demon will pop out. What do you think?

Brilliant. But to have voice recognition, an educational environment, AND launch mechanisms, the doll would cost at least a hundred bucks.

Should I Buy Baby Toys That Are Fun, or Educational?

Should I Buy Baby Toys That Are Fun, or Educational?

The great parenting debate

It’s a dilemma that you’ll face quite a few times throughout your parenting life – do you go for something that you know the kids will love and go crazy over (usually either junk food or based on a TV character), or do you buy something that’s healthy – for either their body or mind? Fortunately, it’s a topic that you won’t have to tackle for some months after you become a parent, as there is little difference in toys for babies. Today we explore how you can create a healthy mix of ‘fun’ baby toys and educational baby toys from ages 0-3.

Before their first birthday

Before your child turns one, there is actually no debate to have. Every single toy you can offer your baby is educational … no matter how fun it looks. There’s no way to ‘spoil’ your under-1 year old with baby toys. It doesn’t matter how much advertising a toy contains, and how pointless it seems to an adult, all baby toys can be learned from equally and drooled on equally at this age. Even some of those that are ordinarily vilified…

Is television good for my baby?

Yes, even television has plenty to teach young kids – the stimulation of bright colours and music, the challenge of pattern recognition, as well as the abundant human faces (which babies are pre-programmed to pay attention to) mean that television can be a great learning experience for babies. Of course, your child can have too much of a good thing – the key is balance.

Into toddlerhood

As your child moves into toddlerhood, you’ll start to have to focus on creating a mix of ‘fun’ time and educational time. Some children naturally pay little attention to advertising and television, and would far prefer to be playing with age-appropriate puzzles or challenge-based baby toys, getting muddy in the garden, or being read to. And of course, it’s wise to let your children lead if they naturally lean towards activities that will stimulate their learning. In other situations though, you’ll need to provide alternating ‘fun’ and educational experiences in terms of baby toys, television and activities.

The case for ‘fun’ baby toys

Here are some pertinent points when you’re thinking about baby toys for over-1s that are purely for fun:

• All toys, even fun-based toys, provide some level of education at this age

• Toys that your child finds fun will likely get played with more often, making them both better value for money and more likely to help him learn

• Children usually stop finding toys fun when they stop teaching them something …

However, you do need to make sure (especially with older toddlers) that they don’t fall into a mental rut where they habitually play with baby toys that they find ‘easy’. If you notice this, you’ll need to take the lead and start showing them how to use baby toys for older ages, helping them build confidence.

The case for educational baby toys

Educational baby toys are usually thought of as those that help build those skills that will be used in formal education. For example, shape naming and recognition toys, colour matching toys, and any baby toy that has a ‘purpose’ and presents a significant challenge can be thought of as educational. Here’s why it can be great to use these baby toys to push your toddler past the boundaries of fun:

Educational toys can instil a sense of pride in achievement which is very useful later in life

• Building the skills of traditional education means that your child will feel more comfortable and confident in a kindergarten or school environment, and therefore do better

Educational toys usually need parental involvement … it’s a great excuse to spend time with them!
