Q&A: Why Do Some Senior Citizen Women Own Many Cats?

Question by Sweet Dreams: Why do some senior citizen women own many ?
I mean I know there's a stereotype of "a single lady with cats"
To be honest, my neighbor was a senior citizen woman who was TOTALLY OBSESSED with cats!!
Her door mat had cats on them, her window did sill had furry stuffed animal cats with them, and she also used to own a cat.

Why do senior citizen women have cats like these?
Is the cat supposed to make up for not having been married to a man?
Is he supposed to be a companion of a husband-type?

another question:
Why does it have to be cats? Why can't it be some other pet?

Cats don’t require a lot of work. Just give them a litterbox and clean it and they are gold. Dogs you have to bathe/take outside/go for walks..they need lots of attention. Cats probably just give them company too, when you get old your friends/relatives/loved ones start dieing off, which is sad but cats and animals give them comfort sometimes.

  • Crystal_Gem:

Exactly. They don’t require much work. Just a litter box.
They offer so much love and tenderness.
They don’t bug your head with loud barking.

Mainly, it’s just that there are so many abandoned cats around. People want to save them is mainly why some people have so many!

because an old woman wouldn’t want to care for a fucking big ass snake, or iguanas. even with dogs, an old lady would have a hard time unless they are all small dogs. but with dogs u gotta clean their shit and walk them. cats a the easiest pets, soft and furry (an old woman wants that), cats are self cleaning (u never have to give them a bath), and they only shit in one area (the sandbox).

thats why cats, because other pets would suck for an old woman

and why not hamsters? she would say “fuck hamsters, what am i 6? no im an old ass lady i dont have time for bullshit pets”

summary: cats are the perfect pet for an old lady cuz they fit into her lifestyle already

  • Denny Crane:

    Simple, because they like cats.

I have a sister who has many cats living both inside and out of her house. She has had them all gravitate
to her yard in search of food, or a place to sleep. The wilder ones remain outside. And the older ones
she’s had longer, are allowed in the house. She can’t say no, to a hungry animal. She also has opposs-
oms coming around for the outside cat food. It’s like the neighborhood cafe. Any and all are welcome.
When she wants to go away, she has to get a neighbor to come and feed them all around the back
porch. So she feels tied down, but she won’t leave them anymore than she has to. She’s never been
married, and having these cats around, must give her a sense of ‘motherhood’ to some degree. She
used to have a dog for many years, until it died of old age. She thinks she’ll get another dog, after she
retires. She’s got too many mouths to feed now. But she feels obligated to care for them.

It is a stereotype. That’s why the cat lady on The Simpsons is so funny. Yes, there are a few people like that, and not just women. And not just old women. And not just single old women. Some people, and I stress SOME, have a need to lavish love on pets. I don’t know why. Pets are wonderful companions but definitely not husband material. Cats are easier to maintain than dogs, and are more interesting than fish.

I know two “cat people”, neither of them elderly. Both are cat rescuers. It seems that there are a lot more feral cats in the U.S. than feral dogs, and these lovely people trap them, spay them, and if they can’t be socialized, return them to their original habitats to live out their lives without producing more feral cats. Both have decided to keep several of these cats as their own pets because after socializing them, they were either unable to find homes for them, or they had grown to love them. Believe me, what these people do is not easy or inexpensive.

I’ll hazard a guess that your senior neighbor adores kitty faces.
I’d be real careful with the man-husband notion

My neighbors shrink heads wanna trade?

Not all “seniors” who have a lot of cats are females.I am a male who is owned by six cats.

God gave each of us certain talents and mine happens to be the care of animals. My cats are excellent judges of character. For example if the females I become interested in are not cat lovers the relationship does not continue.

I also work with an animal rescue group on Saturdays as well.(The golf courses are too crowded).

I’ve known some folks like that and they are indeed the gentlest and most harmless people I’ve ever met. Kitties don’t have to be taken for walks, they are always cute and they make great company. I might want to be a crazy cat lady someday, who knows?

  • June smiles:

They like them, and strangely, homeless cats instinctively will find the ones who love them and will feed them.

I don’t know. I used to date a lady that had 32 cats. She got angry when I called her home Helen’s cat house.

  • ConansOwner:

Not all have cats. Althought I have a friend who does have 4 cats and cats are less work.. Most of the Senior Citizen women that I know have dogs. Judi has 3 rather large protective dogs that she rescued from the shelter. Marilyn has a Westie. Another friend named her 2 large dogs – Seiko and Rolex – yes, watchdogs. For safety, companionship & dedication, I think a dog works well for SCs – men & women.

Also I know a SC woman who raises birds & she has cats & dogs.

I had a cat when I was young. I just like cats (as well as dogs). At this time of my life, a cat is easier to take care of than a dog and is great company when you live alone. They don’t take the place of humans but they are great companions. I was married at one time and I have a son.
